The physics department at M.I.T. replaced the traditional large introductory lecture with smaller classes that emphasise hands on, interactive, collaborative learning. After years of experimentation, the department made the change permanent and attendance rose while the failure rate fell. Other universities, among them Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, North Carolina State University and Harvard, were making similar changes.
